DESCRIPTION:Mentorointiohjelma materiaalitekniikan ja 3D- tulostuksen opiskelijoille ja ammattilaisille  \nAika: Tammikuusta 2024 alkaen sisältäen yhteisen aloitustapahtuman ja 3-5 mentorointisessiota  \nToukokuussa 2024 yhteinen päätöstapahtuma  \nPaikka: Mentorointitapaamiset tullaan järjestämään joko etäyhteyksin tai kasvotusten osallistujien toiveiden ja tilanteiden mukaan. Aloitus- ja päätöstapahtumat on tarkoitus järjestää pääkaupunkiseudulla\, mutta myös etäosallistuminen on mahdollista.  \nKohderyhmä: Ohjelma on suunnattu materiaali- ja valmistustekniikan opiskelijoille ja ammattilaisille. Osallistujien tulee olla ASM Finland ry:n tai opiskelijoille suunnatun Material Advantage -ohjelman ja/tai Suomen Korroosioyhdistys SKY:n jäseniä ja/tai FIRPA:n jäseniä. \n\n\n\nASM Finland ry\, Suomen Korroosioyhdistys SKY ja FIRPA järjestävät yhteistyönä mentorointiohjelman\, joka on suunnattu materiaali- ja valmistustekniikan opiskelijoille ja ammattilaisille. Mentorointiohjelma on ilmainen ASM:n\, SKY:n ja FIRPA:n jäsenille eli mukaan pääset liittymällä jäseneksi johonkin näistä yhdistyksistä.  \nMentorointiohjelman tarkoituksena on luoda yhteyksiä urallaan eri vaiheissa olevien osaajien välillä\, mahdollistaen näin mentoroitavan omien kykyjen kehittymisen\, vahvuusalueiden hahmottamisen ja verkostoitumisen muiden osaajien kanssa. Mentorointi on prosessi\, jossa kokeneempi mentori auttaa mentoroitavaa eli aktoria oppimaan lisää ja kehittymään ammatillisesti jakamalla omaa osaamistaan.  \nOsallistujan niin toivoessa\, tapaamiset voidaan järjestää myös ns. vertaismentorointina urallaan samassa vaiheessa olevien kesken\, tällöin ohjelma tarjoaa mahdollisuuden päästä pohtimaan uravaiheessa tai tilanteessa ajankohtaisia teemoja toisen materiaalitekniikan osaajan kanssa. Vertaismentoroinnissa henkilöt toimivat vuorotellen mentorin ja aktorin rooleissa.  \nMentorointi tapahtuu kahdenvälisissä luottamuksellisissa keskusteluissa\, jotka perustuvat sitoutumiseen ja avoimuuteen. Ensimmäisessä tapaamisessa mentori ja aktori tai vertaismentorit allekirjoittavat kahdenkeskisen sopimuksen\, jossa prosessin parametrit ja kesto määritetään. Nämä mentoroinnille asetettavat tavoitteet määräytyvät aktorin kiinnostuksen kohteiden ja toiveiden mukaan. Sekä mentorin että aktorin toiveita kysytään jo ilmoittautumisessa ja ne otetaan huomioon pareja muodostettaessa. Tavoitteena on\, että mentori ja aktori käyvät kevään aikana vähintään neljä keskustelua aktorin toivomista aiheista. Pari sopii keskustelujen ajankohdat ja toteutustavat keskenään. Keskusteluun suositellaan varattavaksi ainakin tunti tai puolitoista. Hyvä käytäntö on\,  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nettä käsiteltävistä aiheista sovitaan jo etukäteen\, jotta sekä mentori että aktori voivat valmistautua keskusteluun.  \nIlmoittautuminen: Mentorointiohjelmaan haku on mahdollista keskiviikkoon 15.11.2023 asti sähköpostitse osoitteeseen asm.finland(at)asmfinland.fi. DESCRIPTION:Stress Corrosion Cracking of Stainless Steels and Nickel Base Alloys \nEn-Hou Han \nInstitute of Corrosion Science and Technology (ICoST) \nSouth China University of Technology (SCUT) \nGuangzhou\, China \nAbstract \nStress corrosion cracking (SCC) of different materials happens in various industries. Although SCC has long history and researchers have revealed considerable understanding\, the mechanisms are not clear and accurate prediction of SCC is still not possible. Many factors affect SCC\, including but not limited to alloy composition and microstructure\, environment\, and load (stress\, strain and strain rate). This lecture will mainly discuss SCC crack initiation and propagation for Fe-Cr-Ni alloys\, both stainless stainless steels and nickel-base alloys\, and will especially focus on the effects of local parameters (local material\, local chemical & electrochemical and local mechanical conditions). The electrochemical corrosion behavior and the chemical composition\, microstructure and electronic characters of oxide films for stainless steels and Ni base alloys used in nuclear power plants will be reviewed. The effects of water chemistry and material microstructure on oxide films were analyzed in order to relate oxide film properties to electrochemical behavior. The effect of the surface after surface finishing\, grinding\, machining or scratching on corrosion and SCC initiation in simulated primary water of nuclear power plants will be discussed because the different manufacturing techniques can cause the formation of microstructures of different gradients near the surface and also cause large differences in surface deformation. SCC propagation in various conditions will be presented as will an SCC prediction model that has bee applied to real nuclear power industry components. Finally\, future research trends on the topic will be proposed. \nBiography \nDr. En-Hou Han is a full professor of South China University of Technology (SCUT)\, President of Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology (ICoST). He received his Ph.D. from Northeastern University in Shenyang\, China in 1990. From 1995-1998 he was a research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a professor at the Institute of Materials Research in Shenyang from 1998-2023. Prof. Han’s research interests include (1) Localized corrosion mechanism understanding and characterization\, especially the interaction of mechanical and chemical effects\, such as corrosion fatigue\, stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement for various materials in harsh environments; (2) Corrosion prevention techniques such as nanocomposite coatings\, plating\, inhibitors & cathodic protection; (3) Service lifetime prediction and failure analysis for engineering structure and components by big data modelling\, digital twins & artificial intelligence (AI); (4) R & D of corrosion resistant alloys (including HEAs) in severe industry environment including new energy industries\, energy storage and sea water. However\, the quest for effective corrosion inhibitors within the vast chemical space remains a difficult challenge. Over the past decades\, countless research papers have documented the inhibitory effects of individual compounds on various metals across diverse corrosive conditions\, creating an infinite narrative. Fortunately\, recent advancements in machine learning (ML) techniques offer promising avenues for narrowing the search and identifying potential candidates more efficiently. This work highlights the potential of computer-assisted methods in rapidly screening large numbers of organic compounds as potential corrosion inhibitors for magnesium and aluminum alloys. Our approach involves developing quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models using ML algorithms\, specifically support vector regression and kernel ridge regression. These models learn from existing data and generalize to predict the behavior of new compounds. To assess their robustness\, we conducted experimental blind testing. The ML models leverage molecular descriptors derived from geometry and density functional theory calculations of organic compounds. Notably\, two systematic approaches for sparse feature selection\, identifying molecular descriptors most relevant to the corrosion inhibition efficiency of chemical compounds were proposed. This framework outperforms predictions based on randomly selected descriptors. To further enhance prediction quality\, an active learning approach has been implemented. Experimental results from newly predicted modulators were incorporated into extended training data sets\, iteratively improving model accuracy over time. In summary\, ML-driven approaches hold great promise for accelerating the discovery of corrosion inhibitors. By harnessing computational tools\, researchers can efficiently explore the vast chemical space and make informed decisions on the selection of corrosion inhibitors for specific applications. \nBiography\nProf. Mikhail Zheludkevich currently serves as the Director of the Institute of Surface Science at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon\, Germany. Additionally\, he holds a full professorship at the University of Kiel. His research interests revolve around electrochemistry\, multi-functional surfaces\, and the active protection of lightweight materials and multi-material systems. In 2002\, Prof. Zheludkevich earned his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the Belarusian State University\, specializing in the interaction of atomic gases with metallic surfaces. Following a decade of diverse roles at the University of Aveiro in Portugal\, ranging from post-doctoral researcher to group leader\, he joined Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht as the head of the Corrosion and Surface Technology Department. In 2021\, he established the Institute of Surface Science\, a position he continues to lead. He has received recognition for his work\, including the Tajima Prize from the International Society of Electrochemistry in 2016 and the distinction of Person of the Year 2023 by the International Mg Society. Furthermore\, he serves as the chairman of the Aerospace Working Party at the European Federation of Corrosion.

Corrosion reduces the useful life of engineering components\, necessitating the production of more materials. Additionally\, corrosion-resistant metallic materials are often heavier\, resulting in higher carbon footprints. As a result\, the need to develop lightweight\, high-strength\, and corrosion-resistant materials is steadily increasing. The properties of engineering alloys are often limited by conventional compositions and manufacturing technologies. The speaker’s recent work has demonstrated the development of alloys with properties that exceed traditional limits\, achieved through precise control of microstructure and composition. Specific examples of high-energy ball-milled alloys and additively manufactured alloys will be presented\, showing how high corrosion resistance can be achieved through the design of unique microstructures. \nBiography\nRajeev Gupta is an associate professor of materials science and engineering at North Carolina State University. He received his B.S. in materials and metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur\, India and Ph.D. in materials engineering from Monash University\, Australia. Prior to joining the NC State University faculty\, he was an assistant professor of chemical\, biomolecular and corrosion engineering at the University of Akron\, Ohio. He is an associate editor of the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. Rajeev has authored over 130 publications and holds two patents. His primary research interests lie in the broad areas of corrosion and material engineering. His research group focuses on understanding the structure-processing-property-performance relationships in metallic materials\, corrosion initiation and propagation mechanisms\, and high-temperature corrosion using state-of-the-art material characterization and electrochemical techniques. The uncertainties with respect to data are included in the Bayesian probabilities. The uncertainties in models (cause-effect relationships) are included in conditional probabilities. BN’s are useful for modeling corrosion of engineering systems because there are many uncertainties (and missing information) in these systems and the system performance is dependent on a combination of design and operational factors\, including human factors. This talk is aimed at both researchers and practitioners. The talk is divided into three parts: Part 1 will discuss the basics of BN and the various types of BN’s (dynamic BN\, hybrid BN\, Learning BN\, etc.). Part 2 will discuss the application of BN for three industrial problems to illustrate the general approach: seawater corrosion of corrosion resistant alloys\, stress corrosion cracking of onshore pipelines\, and gaseous hydrogen embrittlement of pipeline components. Part 3 will discuss how BN can be used in research to identify causal connections. The talk will conclude with future directions of BN models. \nBiography\nDr. Sridhar\, FAMPP\, FASM is the CEO of MC Consult LLC\, a materials and corrosion consulting company. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Materials Science & Engineering Department at The Ohio State University. He acts as an advisor in projects involving materials integrity issues and brings together diverse entities in addressing complex problems. He was a former Vice President of DNV. His main technical interests involve life prediction and risk assessment of structures and systems. He has conducted research on localized corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking of materials in chemical process\, oil and gas\, and nuclear waste applications. He is active in the development of Bayesian network models for the risk assessment of corrodible systems. He has also been involved in research related to the electrochemical conversion of CO2 into useful products. He worked at DNV from 2007 to 2020 in the Research & Innovation and Oil and Gas units. From 1989 to 2007\, he worked at the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses and the Division of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in Southwest Research Institute\, San Antonio\, Texas in various technical and managerial capacities. From 1981 through 1989\, he worked at Haynes International\, Kokomo\, Indiana as a Group Leader of the corrosion group and was involved in corrosion resistant alloy development. He obtained a B.Tech in Metallurgy at Indian Institute of Technology Madras\, M.S. in Materials Engineering at Virginia Tech.\, and a Ph.D. from University of Notre Dame in 1980 in Metallurgical Engineering. He has published over 200 papers and books/book chapters and has several patents. He has received numerous national and international awards. The talk is entitled “Corrosion of Copper (under Nuclear Waste Repository Conditions).” Jamie Noël has dived deep into Cu corrosion with the goal of using it to contain nuclear waste for a long time. \nDate: 22 April 2025\nTo register (free for all): https://osu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8wGX_OC-SGeSewJZ4GSocw \nCorrosion of Copper (under Nuclear Waste Repository Conditions)\nJames (Jamie) Noël\, Western University \nAbstract\nCopper was one of the first few metals manipulated and used by humans; our history of copper use extends back literally to the Bronze Age. In using copper as the corrosion barrier for nuclear fuel waste containers\, we will count on that copper to function up to a million years or more into the future\, longer than humans’ past experience with the metal. To help validate such an application\, we are studying the corrosion behaviour of copper materials at a fundamental\, mechanistic level under the environmental conditions expected in the deep geologic repository in which the containers would be buried. This environment will evolve over time\, from initially warm and oxidizing to eventually cool and anoxic. Therefore this talk will illustrate how we are evaluating the possibilities and extent of uniform corrosion and localized corrosion of copper in oxygenated environments\, sulfide-driven corrosion (linked to the action of sulfate-reducing bacteria) under anoxic conditions\, and corrosion by oxy-sulfur species during the transition between oxic and anoxic conditions. We also explore possibilities for hydrogen absorption into the copper\, the corrosion-suppressing influences of the highly compacted bentonite clay that will be used to encase the containers and back-fill the tunnels that hold them\, the lessons to be learned from billion-year-old natural deposits of metallic copper and whether galvanic corrosion at a copper-steel couple created by a through-coating defect on Cu-coated steel could lead to significant steel corrosion. \nBiography\nJamie Noël is an associate professor of chemistry at The University of Western Ontario in London\, Canada. He earned BSc and MSc degrees in chemistry from the University of Guelph\, Ontario and PhD from the University of Manitoba\, all in Canada. He is an associate editor for CORROSION Journal and former chair of the ECS Corrosion Division. He has published over 150 journal articles and 6 book chapters. He leads a large research group focused mainly on the corrosion and degradation of materials for use in a nuclear waste repository\, including the corrosion of the nuclear fuel itself. He employs a wide range of electrochemical and advanced surface analytical methods to understand materials degradation at a fundamental level\, and has world-class expertise in applying in situ neutron reflectometry to probe surface composition and structure at the sub-nanometre scale.

DESCRIPTION:Assessing the loading rate dependence of hydrogen environment-assisted cracking behavior in a wide-range of engineering alloys \n Jimmy Burns\, University of Virginia \n\nAbstract \nEnvironment-assisted cracking is a prominent damage mode for a wide-range of engineering materials and operational environments. Most basically\, initiation and sub-critical EAC requires a susceptible material\, a sufficiently aggressive environment\, and a mechanical load. This talk will provide a historic review of the methods used to characterize this damage mode for qualification of materials and life management of engineering systems. There will be a specific emphasis on modern fracture mechanic approaches and standards used to quantify the crack growth kinetics (da/dt) as a function of a stress intensity (K) and various environmental conditions. Of particular importance is that historic literature shows that the applied loading rate (dK/dt) will strongly impact the environment-assisted cracking (EAC) behavior. However\, there is not a systematic quantification of dK/dt dependencies or a rigorous understanding of mechanistic underpinnings of this behavior. Recent work employed a slow-rising K testing framework to quantify the dK/dt dependence (ranging from 0.2 to 20 MPa√m/hr) of EAC in a wide-range of material (Monel K-500\, Custom 465\, AA5456\, AA7075\, Ti 6-4\, Pyrowear 675\, and 316L) and environment combinations that encompass multiple proposed damage mechanisms. Results confirm a strong influence of dK/dt on EAC for material/environment combinations with modest susceptibility. These results are rationalized in the context of stress- versus strain-controlled fracture and a H-modified Ritchie-Knott-Rice crack tip damage model. Furthermore\, the implications of these results on recent testing standardization efforts for environment-assisted cracking are discussed. \n\nBiography \nJames T. Burns joined academia in 2011 and is currently an Associate Professor in the Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia. He was appointed as the Heinz and Doris Wilsdorf Chaired Research Professor in 2021 and the Copenhaver Fellow of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in 2024. Professor Burns received a B.S degree from the United States Air Force Academy in Engineering Mechanics (Materials track) with a Mathematics minor in 2002. He completed his M.S. and Ph.D in Material Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia in 2006 and 2010\, respectively. After his commission into the US Air Force he served as an Aircraft Battle Damage Engineer and Assistant Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) manager for the C-130 from 2002-2004 and as a Research Engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory – Materials and Manufacturing Directorate from 2006-2010. His current research focuses on the intersection of metallurgy\, solid mechanics and electrochemistry. Specifically\, his group investigates the interaction of localized stress/strain with environment conditions\, with a particular emphasis on behavior at the crack tip and H-metal interactions. In general\, experimental data from controlled environmental testing are coupled with high fidelity characterization techniques to gain mechanistic understanding of the damage process; such knowledge is used to inform theoretical and engineering level models. He has been distinguished via the 2019 Engineering Excellence Award from the NASA Engineering Safety Center\, the 2021 HH Uhlig Award from NACE International\, and is a member of the editorial board for the International Journal of Fatigue and Engineering Fracture Mechanics journals. The talk is entitled “Corrosion mechanisms in biological environments.” By “biological environments” Yolanda primarily means the human body. \nPlease register here (free for all) \nCorrosion mechanisms in biological environments \nYolanda Hedberg\nWestern University \nAbstract\nEven tiny amounts of corrosion products can harm the human body\, a water organism\, or food safety. The chemical and physical form of these corrosion products matters in these environments\, as certain chemical species\, such as Ni2+ or Cr2O42-\, are highly toxic to some organisms\, and precipitated oxide nanoparticles might trigger neurodegenerative\, autoimmune\, and other diseases in the human body. Therefore\, test methods and conventions common within the corrosion science community must be adjusted to these requirements. Passive dissolution is governed by very different mechanisms than active dissolution. While active dissolution is dominated by metal oxidation\, many possible (electro-)chemical and interfacial reactions can play a role in passive dissolution. This talk gives some insight into some of them\, including ligand-induced dissolution\, the importance of surface and solution complexation\, protein adsorption and exchange\, and hindered repassivation in tribocorrosion processes. We will also discuss the – still large – discrepancy between clinically observed corrosion of implant materials in humans and that predicted from laboratory tests. \nBiography\nYolanda Hedberg is an interdisciplinary and international corrosion scientist with a focus on health and safety aspects of corrosion. She earned her MSc in materials science from Friedrich-Alexander University in Germany in 2009\, her PhD in corrosion science from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden\, did her postdoc in environmental and occupational toxicology at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden\, habilitated in corrosion science towards health aspects at KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, and is a Canada Research Chair in corrosion science at Western University in Canada since 2020 (Associate Professor of chemistry since 2024). She was also a visiting professor at Delft University of Technology in the corrosion and electrochemistry group in 2024-2025. She earned many awards\, including the ECS Morris Cohen Award\, the Nordic Prize for Colloid and Surface Chemistry\, and the Canadian Fred Beamish Award for innovations in analytical chemistry\, for her research work comprising 112 papers\, six book chapters\, and two patents\, many of which had a direct influence on policy documents\, chemical legislation\, product development\, and changes in experimental setups and clinical practices. She is the Director of an international corrosion training program (CORRECT). She leads a large research group focused on understanding corrosion and surface reactions of relevance for health\, environmental\, and societal safety. This includes the corrosion of biomedical devices\, reactions of corrosion products and metallic nanomaterials in the human body\, corrosion protection (coatings) of metals\, and chemical hazard assessments of various metal powders and nanoparticles at work. She combines electrochemical methods\, interfacial-\, solution-\, surface chemical methods\, and spectroscopic and microscopic tools.

DESCRIPTION:Atmospheric Corrosion at the Crossroads of Disciplines: A Five-Decade Scientific Journey\nby Prof. Christofer Leygraf from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm\, Sweden \nAbstract\nThis lecture provides an overview of fifty years of research on atmospheric corrosion—one of the most widespread\, costly\, and challenging forms of material degradation\, with significant technical and societal impacts. The lecture follows the gradual development of knowledge and experimental approaches over time. The research began with long-term field exposure studies\, which offered valuable real-world observations but limited insight into the underlying processes. To better understand how atmospheric corrosion actually develops\, the work moved into the laboratory\, where carefully designed experiments allowed individual factors to be studied in a more controlled way. Over time\, these experiments evolved from simple test systems to more realistic environments\, supported by advanced measurement techniques that made it possible to observe corrosion as it happened. In later stages\, computational modelling was added to further support interpretation and prediction. Together\, these efforts have led to a deeper and more reliable understanding of atmospheric corrosion and how it affects materials in everyday environments. The lecture concludes by highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration—bringing together expertise from materials science\, chemistry\, physics\, and environmental science—to strengthen the field further and to meet future scientific and societal challenges. \nBio\nOver a career spanning five decades\, Christofer Leygraf\, Professor Emeritus at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm\, Sweden\, founded and led a leading research group covering a broad range of fundamental and applied aspects of atmospheric and aqueous corrosion. A central outcome of this work has been the development of a more molecular-level understanding of atmospheric corrosion\, achieved through controlled laboratory and field studies\, advanced modeling of key corrosion processes\, and the application of state-of-the-art\, surface-sensitive in situ analytical techniques. These efforts were further strengthened by interdisciplinary collaboration across physics\, chemistry\, materials science\, and environmental science\, as well as through numerous projects conducted in close partnership with Swedish and international industry.\nProfessor Leygraf has supervised or co-supervised approximately 50 PhD students and has maintained extensive international collaborations. He has held postdoctoral positions at the Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry in Moscow (former USSR) and at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and has served as Visiting Professor at Yale University and at the State Key Laboratory for Corrosion and Protection\, Chinese Academy of Sciences\, in Shenyang. In 2014\, he was appointed Honorary Professor at the University of Science and Technology Beijing.\nHe has authored more than 360 peer-reviewed publications\, receiving approximately 19\,000 citations (h-index 76\, December 2025). He is the first author of the second edition of Atmospheric Corrosion (Wiley\, 2016)\, which has been cited in more than one hundred countries. In recognition of these accomplishments\, Christofer Leygraf is an elected member of the Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and has received several international awards\, including the Herbert Uhlig Award (2003\, ECS)\, Khwarizmi International Award (2006\, Iran)\, Willis Rodney Whitney Award (2007\, NACE)\, U.R. SUMMARY:CorroZoom David Shoesmith: Corrosion Processes Under High-Level Nuclear Waste Disposal Conditions
DESCRIPTION:To register (free for all):\nhttps://osu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ZAeUXHD7RCKDy_SFgR5zbw \nCorrosion Processes Under High-Level Nuclear Waste Disposal Conditions\nProf. David Shoesmith\nUniversity of Western Ontario \nAbstract\nThe planned deep geologic repositories (DGR) for high level nuclear waste (nuclear fuel) will consist of a sequence of geological and engineered barriers whose long-term performance must be demonstrated by the development of robust assessment models. These models must be based on a thorough understanding of the performance of a wide range of materials. The greatest threat to both the fuel (uranium dioxide inside a Zr alloy cladding) and the primary engineered barrier (a Cu-coated or Cu-shielded steel container) will be corrosion in the range of exposure environments which will exist as DGR conditions evolve with time. This presentation will concentrate on a range of possible corrosion processes: (i) Cu corrosion in the presence of microbially generated sulfide under both oxic and anoxic conditions; (ii) galvanic coupling between Cu and carbon steel; (iii) the mechanism and consequences of hydrogen absorption by Zr alloys and how it differs from absorption by titanium alloys; (iv) the influence of water radiolysis products (mainly H2O2 and H2) and radioactive fission product-doping on uranium dioxide dissolution. Besides studies using standard electrochemical and surface analytical measurements\, the application of a range of additional techniques will be described. These include scanning electrochemical microscopy\, neutron reflectometry coupled with electrochemical methods\, confocal laser scanning microscopy\, and X-ray microcomputed tomography. \nBio\nDavid Shoesmith is an emeritus professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Western Ontario (UWO\, London\, Canada) and the previous director of Surface Science Western (https://www.surfacesciencewestern.com/). He received a Ph.D. in electrochemistry from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK) and was a research scientist with Atomic Energy of Canada prior to joining UWO. He is an elected Fellow of the Canadian Royal Society\, and has received a number of national and international awards. His research has been focused on the application of electrochemical and surface analytical techniques\, oxide and sulfide film properties\, microscopic examination of the evolution and spatial distribution of corrosion damage on a wide range of materials including copper\, titanium and nickel alloys\, uranium dioxide\, and carbon steels\, and on the development of computational models for corrosion processes. A major emphasis has been on corrosion processes anticipated within high-level nuclear waste repositories with funding\, at various times\, from the relevant organizations in Canada\, Sweden\, the United States\, and Switzerland. He has served on scientific and review boards for these\, and other\, countries.
