SUMMARY:CorroZoom: Roger Newman: The effect of alloy composition on molten salt corrosion- Dealloying\, but not as we know it
DESCRIPTION:To register (free for all): \nhttps://osu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_uVkt8yKkQX-k_jodqB8zPA \n\n\nThe effect of alloy composition on molten salt corrosion- Dealloying\, but not as we know it  \n  \nRoger Newman \nUniversity of Toronto\, Canada \n\nAbstract \nThis talk will be based mainly on the recent PhD research of Dr. Touraj Ghaznavi\, with other comparison material as required. Molten salt corrosion is topical in several technologies\, including small modular molten-salt nuclear reactors. Our research has been focused on NiFe and NiCrFe alloys\, but the general principles should be applicable to other solid-solution alloy systems that show dealloying\, with the formation of nano- or micro-porous dealloyed layers. \nThere are two kinds of dealloying threshold\, or parting limit\, that are familiar at ambient temperatures in aqueous electrolytes. One is in the 50-60 at.% range of less-noble (LN) metal content (example: AuAg). The other is close to 20 at.% LN content (example: CuZn). Both these compositions have a meaning within percolation theory\, as discussed by Artymowicz et al. [1]. It is recognized that increasing kinetics of surface diffusion of the more-noble (MN) metal (or surface exchange of MN metal and its ions\, as in the brass example) reduce the parting limit by exposing otherwise inaccessible paths rich in LN metal. With this background\, we can expect a further reduction in the parting limit at the high temperatures where we get molten salt corrosion. We can also expect that with sufficient increase in temperature\, lattice diffusion of alloying elements will start to affect the kinetics and/or the morphology of the dealloyed material. Both these expectations have been realized in Dr. Ghaznavi’s work using molten chloride salts\, but with several surprises along the way. \n[1] D.M. Artymowicz\, J. Erlebacher\, and R.C. Newman\, Relationship between the parting limit for de-alloying and a particular geometric high-density site percolation threshold\, Philosophical Magazine 89(21) (2009) 1663-1693. \n  \nBiography \nRoger Newman is Professor and UNENE Research Chair in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto (UofT). Before joining UofT in 2004\, he spent 20 years in the Corrosion and Protection Centre\, UMIST\, Manchester\, UK. Prior to that\, he spent several years at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the US. His main research interests have been localized corrosion\, stress corrosion cracking\, passivity\, and dealloying. He also has an active program in metallic nanomaterials. He has ongoing research with the nuclear power\, nuclear waste management\, and natural gas (GTL) industries. Some decades ago\, he was very active in corrosion issues in the pulp and paper industry\, and oil and gas production.

SUMMARY:CorroZoom Season 3 Webinar - Chaofang Dong
DESCRIPTION:Fourth CorroZoom Season 3 Webinar – Chaofang Dong\n27 March 2023 at 0800 US Eastern\nTo register (free for all):\nhttps://osu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_lead_HwPTJ-iVT5ooTrfSw \nIntegrated Multiscale Modeling and Prediction of Corrosion\nChaofang Dong\nUniversity of Science and Technology Beijing\, China \nAbstract \nIn the last decade\, corrosion modeling has made progress towards the atomic-scale clarification of corrosion mechanisms and the computer-aided designing of advanced materials with good corrosion resistance. This talk focuses on the theoretical methods of integrated calculations and the developments in applications to the study of corrosion. Three specific applications will be presented: first-principles techniques combined with molecular dynamics\, peridynamic theory\, and the finite element method provide multiscale models to investigate the micro-mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen-induced cracking. The modeling of passivity and passive film breakdown will be discussed elaborately through the transport of point defects and its correlation with the energy level degeneracy. Because corrosion jeopardizes materials longevity and engineering safety\, the corrosion rate needs to be predicted to better guide materials selection. Although field exposure experiments are dependable\, their prohibitive cost and time-consuming nature make it difficult to obtain a large dataset for machine learning. Here\, we propose a strategy called Integrating Ab-initio Calculations with Random Forest to optimize the model\, thereby estimating the corrosion rate of Al alloys in diverse environments. For better and efficient development of integrated computation of corrosion\, extensive cooperation and powerful data infrastructure are needed by stronger joint efforts in the future. \nBiography \nChaofang Dong is professor in the National Materials Corrosion and Protection Data Center and Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Materials Genome Engineering at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). She has been in Corrosion and Protection Center of USTB for 29 years since her undergraduate studies. She spent one year at UC Berkeley in the US. Her research interests are focused on the study of passivation\, pitting and atmospheric corrosion\, including multiscale simulation\, computation\, and micro-mechanism analysis of corrosion. She has been involved in the development of a data-driven rational design strategy\, and engineering a robust pathway from simulation analysis\, experimental validation to engineering demonstration for the development of corrosion-resistant metals.

SUMMARY:CorroZoom Webinar: Kevin Ogle: Element-resolved electrochemistry and its application to aqueous corrosion
DESCRIPTION:Fifth CorroZoom Season 3 Webinar – Kevin Ogle \n26 April 2023 at 0800 US Eastern \nTo register (free for all): \nhttps://osu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UdDaQi7MS9q29jUp1YHF-Q \n  \nElement-resolved electrochemistry and its application to aqueous corrosion \n  \nKevin Ogle \nEcole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Paris\, PSL University in Paris\, France \n\nAbstract \nAqueous metallic corrosion is an electrochemical phenomenon and much of the theory and experimental techniques for predicting and assessing corrosion are based on the application of electrochemical concepts and techniques. While electrochemical measurements provide rich and meaningful kinetic information on the underlying faradaic processes\, they are often insufficient to identify the chemical mechanisms of these processes\, limiting their utility as predictive tools. Element-resolved electrochemistry\, specifically atomic emission spectroelectrochemistry (AESEC)\, is an emerging technique that provides elemental resolution to conventional electrochemical methods. In this way we can quantitatively probe the “fate” of the elemental constituents of a material in real time during its reaction with an aggressive electrolyte. The kinetics of selective dissolution\, surface enrichment\, and non-faradaic processes such as oxide dissolution or particle detachment – not apparent in conventional electrochemical methods – may be directly measured with quantitative time resolution difficult to achieve by ex situ analysis. In this presentation we will review the methodology of AESEC and its application to a variety of aqueous corrosion phenomena including the passivation of multi-principal element alloys\, anomalous hydrogen production on magnesium\, and the pickling of aluminum alloys. \n  \nBiography \nKevin Ogle is a professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Paris\, PSL University in Paris\, France and a research affiliation with the Institut de Recherche de Chimie-Paris\, CNRS. He earned the PhD in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin\, his dissertation work on the kinetics of heterogenous catalysis by single crystal surfaces using operando surface analytical techniques. After several years at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and a brief period as professor at a liberal arts college\, he entered the R&D of the European steel industry (today ArcelorMittal) in the area of corrosion and surface treatment. There he pursued fundamental research on the use of local electrochemical techniques and the development of atomic emission spectroelectrochemistry (AESEC). He joined the faculty of the ENSCP in 2005 and continues research with element resolved electrochemistry in several areas of aqueous corrosion and surface treatment processes.

SUMMARY:CorroZoom webinar From Fundamental Mechanisms of Delamination to Self-Healing Coating Systems
DESCRIPTION:The next CorroZoom webinar will be on 19 March and will be given by Dr. Michael Rohwerder from Max Planck Institut fuer Eisenforschung (Iron Research) in Dusseldorf\, Germany. The talk is entitled “From Fundamental Mechanisms of Delamination to Self-Healing Coating Systems.” Michael has used state of the art tools to develop a detailed understanding of the most common form of organic coating failure\, delamination\, and also interesting coating systems that are self-healing. \nPlease register by clicking here. \nFrom Fundamental Mechanisms of Delamination to Self-Healing Coating Systems\nMichael Rohwerder\, Max Planck Institut fuer Eisenforschung (Iron Research)\, Dusseldorf\, Germany \nAbstract\nUndamaged coatings can withstand corrosive environments usually for quite long exposure times. Once a defect is inflicted into them\, however\, corrosion-driven delamination of organic coatings can be quite fast. Delamination is a pervasive issue in coatings and protective layers\, compromising structural integrity and longevity across various industries. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms behind delamination is crucial for developing effective mitigation strategies. In this talk\, we delve into the intricate processes driving delamination\, exploring factors such ion migration along and oxygen reduction at the interface. Building upon this foundation\, we investigate innovative approaches to combat delamination through the development of self-healing coating systems. Self-healing coatings offer promising solutions to mitigate delamination\, prolonging the lifespan and performance of coated surfaces. Special emphasis will be on the application of conducting polymers for self-healing coating systems and on strategies for achieving reliable and safe long-term storage. \nBiography\nMichael Rohwerder is head of the corrosion research group at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH (MPIE) in Düsseldorf (Germany). He studied Physics at the University of Hamburg and obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Düsseldorf. Postdoctoral stays followed at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Erlangen. In 2000\, he joined MPIE\, where he mainly works on electrochemical reactions on surfaces and at interfaces\, corrosion\, and self-healing coatings.\nNotably\, in 2007 Michael was awarded a Christian Doppler Laboratory (CDL for Diffusion and Segregation\, 2008-2014)\, where he pioneered innovative Kelvin probe-based methods for highly sensitive and spatially resolved hydrogen detection as well as for studying electrochemical reactions at buried interfaces. As a member-at-large of the Corrosion Division of the Electrochemical Society and the editor of Materials & Corrosion\, Michael actively contributes to advancing the field.\nHis research at MPIE spans a broad spectrum\, ranging from fundamental studies on coating delamination\, novel zinc alloy coatings\, and self-healing organic coatings to investigations on hydrogen behavior in metals and high-temperature grain boundary oxidation. Central to his work are dedicated model experiments and the continual advancement of experimental techniques\, extending his contributions also into the realm of fundamental electrochemistry. Michael’s impactful research is evidenced by his extensive publication record\, comprising over 200 peer-reviewed papers. In 2023\, he received the prestigious European Corrosion Medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field.

SUMMARY:CorroZoom webinar Stress Corrosion Cracking of Stainless Steels and Nickel Base Alloys
DESCRIPTION:Stress Corrosion Cracking of Stainless Steels and Nickel Base Alloys \nEn-Hou Han \nInstitute of Corrosion Science and Technology (ICoST) \nSouth China University of Technology (SCUT) \nGuangzhou\, China \nAbstract \nStress corrosion cracking (SCC) of different materials happens in various industries. Although SCC has long history and researchers have revealed considerable understanding\, the mechanisms are not clear and accurate prediction of SCC is still not possible. Many factors affect SCC\, including but not limited to alloy composition and microstructure\, environment\, and load (stress\, strain and strain rate). This lecture will mainly discuss SCC crack initiation and propagation for Fe-Cr-Ni alloys\, both stainless stainless steels and nickel-base alloys\, and will especially focus on the effects of local parameters (local material\, local chemical & electrochemical and local mechanical conditions). The electrochemical corrosion behavior and the chemical composition\, microstructure and electronic characters of oxide films for stainless steels and Ni base alloys used in nuclear power plants will be reviewed. The effects of water chemistry and material microstructure on oxide films were analyzed in order to relate oxide film properties to electrochemical behavior. The effect of the surface after surface finishing\, grinding\, machining or scratching on corrosion and SCC initiation in simulated primary water of nuclear power plants will be discussed because the different manufacturing techniques can cause the formation of microstructures of different gradients near the surface and also cause large differences in surface deformation. SCC propagation in various conditions will be presented as will an SCC prediction model that has bee applied to real nuclear power industry components. Finally\, future research trends on the topic will be proposed. \nBiography \nDr. En-Hou Han is a full professor of South China University of Technology (SCUT)\, President of Institute of Corrosion Science and Technology (ICoST). He received his Ph.D. from Northeastern University in Shenyang\, China in 1990. From 1995-1998 he was a research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a professor at the Institute of Materials Research in Shenyang from 1998-2023. Prof. Han’s research interests include (1) Localized corrosion mechanism understanding and characterization\, especially the interaction of mechanical and chemical effects\, such as corrosion fatigue\, stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement for various materials in harsh environments; (2) Corrosion prevention techniques such as nanocomposite coatings\, plating\, inhibitors & cathodic protection; (3) Service lifetime prediction and failure analysis for engineering structure and components by big data modelling\, digital twins & artificial intelligence (AI); (4) R & D of corrosion resistant alloys (including HEAs) in severe industry environment including new energy industries\, energy storage and sea water. He received many awards and honors and has leadership roles in the corrosion and materials communities. \nMore information and registration here.

SUMMARY:CorroZoom: Active Learning Approach Towards Discovery of New Efficient Corrosion Inhibitors
DESCRIPTION:To register (free for all): \nhttps://osu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_AH4DD_ZaSw2RpA-xtUQR_g \n  \nActive Learning Approach Towards Discovery of New Efficient Corrosion Inhibitors \nMikhail Zheludkevich\nInstitute of Surface Science\nHelmholtz Zentrum Hereon\nGeesthacht\, Germany \nAbstract\nOrganic corrosion inhibitors\, whether added to protective coatings or directly to corrosive environments\, play a crucial role in various active corrosion protection strategies. However\, the quest for effective corrosion inhibitors within the vast chemical space remains a difficult challenge. Over the past decades\, countless research papers have documented the inhibitory effects of individual compounds on various metals across diverse corrosive conditions\, creating an infinite narrative. Fortunately\, recent advancements in machine learning (ML) techniques offer promising avenues for narrowing the search and identifying potential candidates more efficiently. This work highlights the potential of computer-assisted methods in rapidly screening large numbers of organic compounds as potential corrosion inhibitors for magnesium and aluminum alloys. Our approach involves developing quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models using ML algorithms\, specifically support vector regression and kernel ridge regression. These models learn from existing data and generalize to predict the behavior of new compounds. To assess their robustness\, we conducted experimental blind testing. The ML models leverage molecular descriptors derived from geometry and density functional theory calculations of organic compounds. Notably\, two systematic approaches for sparse feature selection\, identifying molecular descriptors most relevant to the corrosion inhibition efficiency of chemical compounds were proposed. This framework outperforms predictions based on randomly selected descriptors. To further enhance prediction quality\, an active learning approach has been implemented. Experimental results from newly predicted modulators were incorporated into extended training data sets\, iteratively improving model accuracy over time. In summary\, ML-driven approaches hold great promise for accelerating the discovery of corrosion inhibitors. By harnessing computational tools\, researchers can efficiently explore the vast chemical space and make informed decisions on the selection of corrosion inhibitors for specific applications. \nBiography\nProf. Mikhail Zheludkevich currently serves as the Director of the Institute of Surface Science at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon\, Germany. Additionally\, he holds a full professorship at the University of Kiel. His research interests revolve around electrochemistry\, multi-functional surfaces\, and the active protection of lightweight materials and multi-material systems. In 2002\, Prof. Zheludkevich earned his PhD in Physical Chemistry from the Belarusian State University\, specializing in the interaction of atomic gases with metallic surfaces. Following a decade of diverse roles at the University of Aveiro in Portugal\, ranging from post-doctoral researcher to group leader\, he joined Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht as the head of the Corrosion and Surface Technology Department. In 2021\, he established the Institute of Surface Science\, a position he continues to lead. He has received recognition for his work\, including the Tajima Prize from the International Society of Electrochemistry in 2016 and the distinction of Person of the Year 2023 by the International Mg Society. Furthermore\, he serves as the chairman of the Aerospace Working Party at the European Federation of Corrosion.

SUMMARY:CorroZoom webinar Towards Sustainable Alloys: Overcoming Corrosion Challenges by Engineering Suitable Microstructures
DESCRIPTION:CorroZoom webinar\nTowards Sustainable Alloys: Overcoming Corrosion Challenges by Engineering Suitable Microstructures\nDate: 23 January 2025\, 15:00 \nRajeev Gupta\nDepartment of Materials Science and Engineering\, North Carolina State University \nAbstract\nReducing material consumption\, increasing the useful service life\, and promoting recycling are critical components of creating a sustainable future. Corrosion reduces the useful life of engineering components\, necessitating the production of more materials. Additionally\, corrosion-resistant metallic materials are often heavier\, resulting in higher carbon footprints. As a result\, the need to develop lightweight\, high-strength\, and corrosion-resistant materials is steadily increasing. The properties of engineering alloys are often limited by conventional compositions and manufacturing technologies. The speaker’s recent work has demonstrated the development of alloys with properties that exceed traditional limits\, achieved through precise control of microstructure and composition. Specific examples of high-energy ball-milled alloys and additively manufactured alloys will be presented\, showing how high corrosion resistance can be achieved through the design of unique microstructures. \nBiography\nRajeev Gupta is an associate professor of materials science and engineering at North Carolina State University. He received his B.S. in materials and metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur\, India and Ph.D. in materials engineering from Monash University\, Australia. Prior to joining the NC State University faculty\, he was an assistant professor of chemical\, biomolecular and corrosion engineering at the University of Akron\, Ohio. He is an associate editor of the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. Rajeev has authored over 130 publications and holds two patents. His primary research interests lie in the broad areas of corrosion and material engineering. His research group focuses on understanding the structure-processing-property-performance relationships in metallic materials\, corrosion initiation and propagation mechanisms\, and high-temperature corrosion using state-of-the-art material characterization and electrochemical techniques. The fundamental research is intended to be applied in developing new materials\, corrosion characterization techniques\, material processing technologies\, and life prediction models. \nTo register (free for all):\nhttps://osu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Rqb3yy6BSkm3QTBYz0q5sw
